The Yes We Must Coalition is offering a workshop to college/university teams for Welcoming All Learners: Establishing Success Pathways for Neurodiverse Students, a two-session workshop on Tuesdays, September 12 and September 26, from 3:00–5:00 pm EDT. The workshop will be led by Dr. Elizabeth Coghill, EdD. BIO, who serves as the Executive Director for Student Academic Success Services at East Carolina University and is a published leader in creating support systems for neurodiverse learners.

Students who demonstrate the potential for college success and bring neurodiverse learning profiles represent a growing population on today’s college campuses. Although post-secondary academic support services have progressed in addressing the academic needs of marginalized students, a gap remains in our understanding of how learning differences impact student success and ways to customize academic support services for neurodiverse student populations (Coghill & Coghill, 2020). Neurodivergent students have lower retention, persistence, and graduation rates than their neurotypical peers (Newman, Wagner, Cemeto, & Knokey, 2009), compounding the challenges experienced by low-income students, in particular. Campus teams will gain a solid foundation for understanding neurodiverse students and how post-secondary educators can impact their success. The workshop will focus attention on successful campus programming models and investigate ways post-secondary leaders, faculty and staff can transform the campus experiences of neurodiverse students.

This workshop is intended for cross-campus teams of at least 2 people to enhance understanding and expand support for neurodivergent students.

What Is Involved?

The workshop will consist of two 2-hour virtual gatherings in Zoom on Tuesdays, September 12 and September 26, 2023, from 3:00–5:00 pm EDT. Campus teams will complete a pre-workshop exercise and also a team assignment in between sessions.

Who Should Attend?

Teams from all Yes We Must Coalition member schools and other colleges/universities who share our commitment to increasing the success of students from low-income backgrounds are invited. The workshop content and activities are relevant whether participants have already explored or developed support systems or are only just considering it. Campus teams will participate together in the workshop sessions and develop an action-oriented plan for their campus.

Teams must consist of at least 2 members. Suggested team members include academic, student life, and enrollment administrators, librarians, First Year Experience and other faculty, academic success staff and advisors, student life and athletic department staff.

Campus Team Outcomes:

  • Gain a better understanding of the needs and characteristics of neurodiverse students and the role of Executive Functioning in academic success.
  • Recognize and respond to common barriers to academic success by exploring models for practical applications to widen access, build support teams and approaches, and uncover funding sources.
  • Meet colleagues at Yes We Must Coalition member schools and others who share common goals and contexts for advancing success of all students and stimulate collaborative work on alternative strategies.
  • Leave with an invitation to participate in a post-meeting virtual Community of Practice to assist one another with plan implementation.

How to Register and Cost for Participating

Cost for a Campus Team of at least 2 and up to 4 members is $350 for Yes We Must Coalition institutional members; cost for a team from non-YWMC institutions is $500. For teams larger than 4, additional members may join at a cost of $75 per additional member. Please look carefully for these categories when you register via PayPal.
